Both Paloma and Aquastar Instant Gas Water Heaters cut fuel consumption 20% to 50% by heating water only as it is used. They have copper heat exchangers, and the burner is stainless steel. These use a combustion vent pipe out through the roof just like a gas tank type heater. ThePaloma heaters require a minimum of 15 pounds water pressure and the Aquastar/Bosch, 30 psi for full performance.

The BOSCH/AQUASTAR 425/1600 models are a good home size for 1 user at a time. The heater is activated by a flow speed of 1/2 gallon per minute. Maximum flow rate is 4 gpm at 45 degree increase, to 2 gpm at 90 degree increase in water temperature. Ask us to send factory literature.

The 425PN and 1600PS models have a standing pilot. The 1600PS (for use with pre-heated water) has an exit thermostat. Its temperature is controlled to constant output despite varying incoming temperature. Useful if you have pre-heated water from a wood stove or solar water heater. The 425HN unit uses a water pressure generated spark ignition, no pilot light.

Cabin/RV/Marine model = Bosch Pro Tankless GWH 260PN. A bit smaller but able to deliver 2.6 gpm with 45 degree temperature rise up to 1.3 gpm at a 90 degree rise.

Description

This Chofu model is a precision built wood-burning water heater designed specifically for hot tubs. It circulates water using the principal of thermosiphon (the pumping action created by rising hot water), eliminating the need for a circulating pump or electricity. This unique feature opens up a whole new range of possibilities for alternative hot tubs. Now you can have a basic soaking tub without pumps, chemicals, or high maintenance. With the Chofu heater you can retrofit an existing tub or put together a low-cost soaking tub, using a wooden tub or stock tank.

The stove body of the Chofu is made with high quality stainless steel, grade (316), so it can be used outside, without worry. And since the firebox is also made of stainless steel, it will withstand years of service without danger of burning-out. The smoke outlet on the Chofu features a unique vented collar that provides secondary combustion of unburned gases, for reducing smoke emissions and chimney sparks.

The Chofu utilizes a sophisticated heat exchange design for efficient water heating. The stainless steel stove body surrounding the firebox is a double-walled water-jacket with a 1-inch space between, making the entire firebox (except the front) a heat-transferring surface. Additional heat transfer takes place in a water-filled baffle plate that runs horizontally through the firebox. The baffle deflects the path of the fire, so it gives up more heat into the water jacket before going up the chimney.

Installation
The Chofu will connect to any tub using accessories provided (see connection kit): flexible neoprene tubes, stainless steel pipes, and thru-wall tub ports. (Thickness of the tub wall must be specified to determine the length of thru-wall ports.)
Installation requires these four basic steps:
(1) Preparing a brick or cement foundation next to the hot tub to receive the Chofu heater.
(2) Cutting 1 7/8-inch holes in the side of the tub wall for thru-wall ports.
(3) Installing pipes to connect heater and tub.
(4) Installing the stove pipe, (8 feet recommended)

Operation
The Chofu operates like a conventional wood stove, achieving its fastest heating rate from dry hardwoods. It uses 17-inch wood with an 18-inch x 14-inch x 14-inch firebox. The most efficient heating comes from using 17-inch x 1 1/2-inch x 1 1/2-inch wood, loaded at 45 min. intervals.

The Chofu has a high and low speed draft control to regulate the heating rate. It operates with the draft wide open for fast heating, and closed down to maintain temperature once the water is hot.

Heating Rate Information
Although the heating rate is variable depending on dryness of wood, frequency of loading, etc., the average heat output of the Chofu CHS is 32,000 BTU’s. A 200-gallon tub can be heated at approx. 20ºF per hour.

Note: The heat output of the Chofu increases after an initial 45-min. warm-up period that heats the stove body and establishes a bed of coals.

Not for pressurized water, 10 psi maximum water jacket. 4" x 2' sections of Stainless steel stove pipe and a finishing cap are also available. A minimum of 8' of the 4" stove pipe is required to create sufficient draw and firebox heating. The cap will make the pipe stack a bit top heavy and therefore requires some stack support. Ideally you would utilize 5 sections of pipe with the cap for proper draw but 4 sections will work. The cap is a very good idea in any area where a fire danger may exist.

The Caframo Ecofan™ is a heat powered fan designed to circulate the warm air created by a wood stove. This fan does not use any batteries or wall cords. These fans have a thermoelectric module which acts as a small generator to power the fan’s motor. When this generator module experiences a heat differential between it’s top and bottom surfaces, it pumps out electricity. The bottom surface of the module is heated by the base of the fan, while the top of the module is kept cooler by the fan’s top cooling fins.
The Ecofan Airplus is designed to be used on freestanding woodstoves with normal surface temperatures of 400-650 degrees F for optimum performance. Temperatures above 650 degrees F(340 degrees C) will damage the Ecofan. We highly recommend that the Ecofan be used in conjunction with a wood stove thermometer to avoid overheating the Ecofan.

Caframo’s Ecofan has been in production for many, many years. We used an early two bladed model for several years before it finally ceased to operate (probably because we overheated it on a regular basis!) We loved its aesthetics, and its blade rotation visually indicated the amount of wood in our stove. As the wood decreased, the blades slowed and we knew it was time to restoke the fire. We hesitate to say that the twin blade action moved appreciable amounts of air but we enjoyed having it. Tracey and I have once again test driven the new three bladed model and it has performed flawlessly. And we are happy to report that it does move significant amounts of air (actual CFMs are hard to quantify).

HOME PROPANE HEATERS
Make the heat where it is needed, no blowers. Each heater has thermostat to set the individual area as needed.

NO ELECTRICITY NEEDED. Cozy Wall Furnace vents through an outside wall behind the heater. Sealed combustion unit draws air from outside and exhausts back to outside. It draws no air from the room, puts no exhaust into the room. The burner is all stainless steel, with 10 year warranty on burner and sealed combustion unit. Finish is WHITE. Push button spark pilot lighting. Listed models have wall mounted thermostat for even room temperature, but you can add the much superior digital/timer control below.

AC fan kit is available for CDV25 and CDV33, but better to add two DC MUFFIN fans for much lower power use.

The 9" diameter vent pipe fits walls 5" to 9" thick; optional extension kit goes to 15" thick. Overall efficiency is about 66%.

Sun-Mar Composting Toilet: Excel NE Excel Non Electric Composting Toilet

The success of the Excel design meant that a three chamber unit could be specifically designed for those with NO continuous 110 volt supply. First launched in 1981, the Excel NE has long been the standard toilet for those living off the grid. A 1998 redesign gave the unit a rounded look, and recessed the drum handle. The Excel NE has no fan or heater. Odorless operation is achieved by a 4" vent mounted at the top rear of the unit which acts like a chimney on a wood stove. For good air movement the vent should be installed vertically and to 2-3 feet above the peak of the roof. Backwoods includes a free 12v fan kit which should be installed if you need to install the toilet with any bends in the vent. No more than 2 45° bends are encouraged, even with the fan. Backwoods recommends using the fan in every installation.

This fan draws 1.4 watts and can be powered by a solar panel and 12 volt marine battery.

Evaporating capacity on the Excel NE is variable, so the 1" drain at the rear should be connected to an approved drain pit, container, or other facility.
