ABOUT SOLAR MODULES

A SOLAR ELECTRIC MODULE WORKS LIKE A CAR BATTERY CHARGER... EXCEPT INSTEAD OF PLUGGING IT INTO THE WALL, YOU PUT IT OUT IN THE SUN.

PHOTO-VOLT-AIC or solar cells convert sunlight directly to electricity within wafer thin cells. Light "particles" called photons actually bounce electrons across a barrier, creating an electrical current. About 36 cells are built into a 4 to 12 square foot solar module. Cells are sealed within a tough resin between a tempered glass front and plastic or foil backing, then framed in aluminum rail. There are many sizes and brands of modules, at similar prices, specifications, and claims. New brands come each year, many as good as, but none better than, the proven reliable brands listed in the next pages. Considering cost and length of module lifetime and warranty, we stock the longest tested and most respected brands.

DIRECT SUNSHINE with no shadows is absolutely necessary for full power. Partial power is produced on overcast days, but any shadows falling directly on a solar module will reduce power, regardless of what some advertisements claim.

DURABILITY: First used 40 years ago for space satellites, modules of that vintage still operate unless the glass has been broken or water has entered the seals. Life expectancy of solar modules is over 30 years. Most photovoltaic modules come with a 20 to 25 year warranty on power output and may last a lifetime.

THE AMOUNT OF POWER a solar array produces depends on the number of modules you use and the number of daily sunshine hours in your climate. Overcast days with only half normal brightness give half of normal power. Some climates allow much more power in summer than winter. Solar modules can easily be added to your array to increase power as your needs grow. Modules are rated by volts, watts, and amps. The AMP rating is the best indicator of the charging you get and is what you will see on your meter during ideal sun conditions.

SOLAR WORLD residential power modules use quality single crystal cells. Tempered glass front and aluminum mounting frame. The SW165 and SW175 have MC cable leads already attached to its junction box. You will need our 30' MC cable with a male and female end. You cut this cable in half in order to plug it into the  pre-installed MC cables and run from there to a combiner box. You may order this cable below. Tested at 50 PSI wind load; 1" hailstones impact at 52mph. SolarWorld is the highest quality construction. We have had no warranty returns or claims in over 20 years of selling SolarWorld  products.

  • String Ribbon™ polycrystalline solar cells outperform thin films and achieve comparable performance to bulk crystalline technologies while using half as much silicon. This technology utilizes a technique in which two high temperature strings are pulled vertically through a shallow silicon melt, and the molten silicon spans and freezes between the strings. The process is continuous: long strings are unwound from spools; the melt is replenished; and the silicon ribbon is cut to length for further processing without interrupting growth.

NEW from KYOCERA

Kyocera's advanced cell-processing technology and automated production facilities produce highly efficient multi-crystal photovoltaic modules. To protect the cells from the most severe environmental conditions, they are encapsulated between a tempered glass cover and an EVA pottant with a PVF back sheet. The entire laminate is installed in an anodized aluminum frame for structural strength and ease of installation.

Kyocera KC167G Module d.Blue Module
Kyocera has perfected its new surface treatment technology and is introducing it on a new line of modules named d.Blue, for its dark blue color.

The newly developed treatment method processes multi-crystalline silicon cells in order to produce a surface texture that minimizes surface reflectance and maximizes output. The result is a maximum conversion efficiency of 15 %, one of the highest conversion efficiencies in the polycrystalline module industry.

d.Blue is ideal for installation on all types of buildings, from residential to large scale commercial systems. The stylish dark blue cells, combined with aluminum module frames, allow the modules to blend in with the buildings architecture while producing energy at exceptional efficiencies.

The d.Blue modules are available in 125, 85, and 65 watt panels. All feature conventional junction boxes, a heavy-duty box-style anodized aluminum frame; and a 20-year power output warranty.

The supply of Kyocera modules is particularly challenging. We have two sources for these modules: Kyocera Solar and another distributor. We get the best price on these modules from Kyocera Solar however Kyocera typically does not have these modules in stock. The other distributor charges us significantly more money but usually has these modules available for immediate shipping.

      In an effort to meet your needs in either a timely fashion or a financial fashion, we have decided to implement a two tier pricing system for Kyocera modules. Effective immediately, we will have a “K” series and a “D” series. The “K” series will ship from Kyocera Solar. As of 7-10-08, the KC130-K modules can be ordered for immediate shipping. (Lead times are estimates and may vary.) As of 7-10-08, the KD135-K modules can be ordered for shipping in August or maybe September. Please get in line asap. As of 5-8-08, The KC85-K and the KC65-K can be ordered. Please expect a 6-8 week lead time.

UNISOLAR

Lighter, unbreakable amorphous (non-crystal) silicon without glass front.

UniSolar framed panels are glass-free modules encapsulated in UV-stabilized polymers and framed with anodized aluminum. A steel sheet backing provides stiffness to the module.  

US/64 modules are equipped with weather-resistant junction boxes to accept 1/2 inch conduit or wire fittings. 

UniSolar uses a triple layer junction to achieve highest efficiencies for amorphous panels. These have larger surface area per watt than crystal modules. Without glass these can be hit and even punctured without destroying the module as when a glass module shatters. Amorphous silicon modules start with a bit higher than rated power, then settle to the rated power within weeks and remain stable at that level for their life. Amorphous silicon does not reduce voltage due to heat, so they equal the performance of higher voltage crystal cell modules. Smaller modules have wire leads, and are suitable for powering a fan, fountain, fence charger, etc... 

Warranty: 20 year limited on US/64 and US/32.   10 year on US/11 and US/5 modules.

INDIA PV 5, 10, and 20 watt Modules

In light of Unisolar's decision to discontinue manufacturing their smaller modules, we have decided to offer this new line of modules which are manufactured in India or China specifically for AEE Solar.  AEE Solar has operated out of its California headquarters for over 20 years and will honor any warranty claims arising against these modules.

These Small Glass and Aluminum Framed modules are glass laminated in aluminum frames with a small junction box on the back. Sturdy frames and tempered glass. These modules have a ten year warranty.
