Newly Revised Battery Care Booklet Now Available

Backwoods Solar has spent over 40 years helping our clients get the highest performance out of their battery banks. We have accumulated a lot of knowledge and personal experience over the years, which helps us design and support all types of battery banks for off-grid and grid-tied solar electric systems. We have gathered those decades of knowledge into our newly revised Battery Care Booklet which, up to now, has only been available to clients purchasing new battery banks from Backwoods Solar. Now we would like to share the Battery Care Booklet with everyone who is looking for a practical guide to installing and maintaining a lead acid based battery bank.

First, a note of caution: Always use personal protective equipment when working with any type of battery. Injury or death can occur if batteries are handled or wired incorrectly.

Lead Acid Battery Basics

Lead acid batteries must be placed into service immediately. They cannot be put into storage for future use without the risk of permanent damage.

Lead acid batteries should never be discharged below 50%. Always fully recharge discharged  batteries for longest lifespan.

Under-sizing a battery bank will almost certainly decrease the lifespan of the batteries. Be sure you have calculated your electrical usage accurately to avoid this costly mistake. Maximum battery life occurs when they are discharged to approximately 85% state of charge, and fully recharged on a daily basis.

Many factors affect the life of your battery bank but these three actions are critical:
  1. Programming your equipment with proper voltage set points. Default settings are typically incorrect.
  2. Frequently recharging your lead acid battery bank to a full state of charge.
  3. Confirming the batteries have reached a full state of charge.
Poor battery performance can be directly attributed to the failure to follow these standard maintenance practices. Our Battery Care Booklet outlines in detail how to set up your charging set points. The booklet covers how to use a hydrometer and/or voltmeter to accurately verify the battery bank's state of charge. Battery maintenance procedures that are explained include keeping flooded cells "topped off" with distilled water, when and how to equalize a flooded lead acid battery bank, reading sealed battery voltages, keeping batteries and cables clean while maintaining tight connections, and many more tips. We also include wiring diagrams, how to avoid costly mistakes when wiring and tips on best safety practices while working around the battery bank.
